What sets Discover apart from other credit card issuers?
Unlike issuers such as Capital One, Chase and Wells Fargo, Discover functions as both a credit card issuer and network, ranking among the top four issuers in the country. As a credit card network, it independently processes transactions among merchants, customers and banks, eliminating the need for partnerships to extend lines of credit.
It boasts a 99 percent acceptance rate at U.S. merchants, although international acceptance may be more limited. However, this may not be the biggest deal (unless you’re a student studying abroad) since Discover doesn’t carry any high-powered travel cards. Instead, Discover's range of credit cards focus on everyday value and peace of mind for everyday spenders and credit builders with:
- No annual fee, no foreign transaction fees, no penalty APR and no fee on your first late payment (then up to $41)
- Discover Match® first-year offer, which matches all rewards earned at the end of your first year
- Rewards rates on all cards
- Award-winning, U.S.-based customer service available 24/7
The remarkable welcome offer potential, minimal fees and high customer satisfaction ratings have kept Discover cards more competitive than many other issuers’ cards for first-time cardholders. In fact, the Discover it® Secured and Discover it® Student Cash Back cards have earned perfect 5/5 Bankrate Review Scores and are the only cards that have consistently won Bankrate Awards* for students and credit-builders.
Discover also has a track record of excellent customer service satisfaction, ranking second in J.D. Power’s 2024 U.S. Credit Card Satisfaction Study, falling just behind American Express. The 2024 study also ranked the Discover it® Student Cash Back as the third-best no-annual-fee rewards card, with the Discover it® Cash Back and Discover it® Miles also ranking above average.
*The Discover it® Secured has won “Best credit card for building your credit” in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025; the Discover it® Student Cash Back has won “Best credit card for students” in 2022, 2024 and 2025.
Tips on choosing the best Discover card
The Discover card you choose should be based on your financial goals and needs. For example, students with little or no credit history might choose one of Discover's student credit cards. If you need to work on your credit, Discover offers secured cards for credit-builders, and if you’re a cash back enthusiast, you might consider a Discover cash back card.
Here are a few tips to help you determine which card best fits your needs.
-
Determine what you want most from your credit card
Naturally, your primary goal behind getting a credit card should drive which type of credit card you should choose, and Discover makes this a pretty straightforward selection process. If you’re building or repairing your credit, the Discover it® Secured Credit Card is the best option if you’re not a student. If you have a balance you need some extra breathing room to pay off, the Discover it® Chrome is the issuer’s best tool. The Discover it® Miles is of course better for travelers, and rewards-savvy spenders looking for high-rate cash back opportunities may prefer the Discover it® Cash Back.
-
Assess your credit score
Discover hasn’t locked any of their cards behind a minimum excellent credit requirement, although we recommend you have good credit to excellent credit scores before applying for the prime credit-focused cards. If your credit score is any lower, you may have to settle for the Discover it® Secured since Discover unfortunately doesn’t offer a card specifically for fair credit.
-
Would you need time to pay off new purchases or a balance transfer?
You can further whittle down the Discover cards on your shortlist if you’d like the safety net of an intro APR on purchases in case of an emergency. The Discover it® Cash Back and Discover it® Miles would be the best options in this case. If you already have a balance and you want to keep interest at bay for a while, the Discover it® Chrome is the prime candidate.
-
Consider your spending habits and rewards goals
Beyond any credit requirements or intro APR needs, the best Discover card for you comes down to the rewards structure since the issuer’s cards share similar fees and features. The Discover it® Cash Back provides the issuer’s highest rewards rates, but the cycling categories, quarterly spending caps and required activation each quarter may not be a great fit for everyone. Instead, the Discover it® Miles and its flat-rate rewards could be the most consistently rewarding Discover card since the rewards are also redeemable for cash back at a 1:1 rate. On the other hand, the Discover it® Chrome could be the most lucrative option for more modest spenders that can maximize the gas and dining categories.

Expert advice on Discover cards
Here’s what credit card expert Nouri Zarrugh has to say about his experience with Discover and a lesser-known card feature that helped him:
“One of the downsides of carrying a wallet full of cards and constantly switching back and forth between them, like I do, is that payment due dates can be tough to juggle. So I’ve paid more in late fees than I care to admit. That’s why I love Discover’s forgiving late fee policy. Mistakes happen, and when I missed my Discover card’s due date (the first and only time), I was so grateful I had a second chance to get things sorted.”
— Nouri Zarrugh, Senior Editor, Credit Cards
This is a great perk to be aware of, even if you’re an experienced cardholder. You should also keep this in mind to avoid interest charges, inconvenience and credit card debt.

Frequently asked questions about Discover credit cards
How we assess the best Discover credit cards
We select cards for “Best” credit cards pages based primarily on how cards score in our proprietary card rating system, our editors’ subjective assessment of card quality, card approval odds and credit requirements and unique card features.
Cards typically must score a minimum of 3.0 stars to be included on a “Best” list. However, we may include cards with scores below 3.0 if they have low credit requirements or unique features — despite their scores, these cards may still be among the “best” in certain categories. Card ratings are not influenced by advertisers or issuer relationships in any way.
Card selection and ordering may vary based on business considerations, including Bankrate visitor interest, site interactions and card application volume. Affiliate commissions (see how we make money), limited-time offers and a card’s general popularity in the product landscape may also influence which cards we feature on our pages and the order in which they appear. Bankrate’s editorial and business teams also strive to feature a variety of card types from various issuers.
Here’s a quick look at how our rating methodology breaks down for Discover cards:
-
5 stars 2%
-
4 - 4.9 stars 35%
-
3 - 3.9 stars 39%
-
2 - 2.9 stars 22%
